ASEAN Defense Summit Urges Addressing Security Challenges
This message was emphasized during a three-day summit held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's capital.
The ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting Plus took place from Friday to Sunday, gathering defense ministers from ASEAN member states alongside representatives from eight partner countries — the United States, China, Russia, Australia, India, Japan, South Korea, and New Zealand.
In a joint declaration issued on Saturday, the defense ministers underscored the importance of adhering to international law, including the UN Charter.
They pointed out that both Southeast Asia and the global community are confronting escalating geopolitical tensions, conflicts, and economic difficulties.
The statement highlighted that these shared challenges, coupled with emerging and cross-border threats, necessitate “collective collaboration for peace.”
Furthermore, the statement acknowledged the “consistent and positive contributions” made by dialogue partners, noting their role in “enhancing ASEAN Member States’ capacity and preparedness to address current and emerging security challenges.”
The defense leaders also stressed the need to foster an environment that supports peace, security, and prosperity, while upholding the rule of law. This can be achieved by promoting a culture of dialogue, encouraging regular consultations, and engaging in substantial, practical cooperation to build mutual trust and confidence.
