Canadian PM Apologizes to Trump Over Contentious Ontario Ad

(MENAFN) Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed he personally apologized to US President Donald Trump following a contentious commercial commissioned by Ontario’s provincial government that used footage of Ronald Reagan to critique trade tariffs.

The ad, which aired earlier this month, repurposed clips from Reagan’s 1987 speech on trade policy and his use of tariffs against Japan, implying that the former president opposed protectionism. The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute condemned the commercial, saying Ontario had used the footage without permission and misrepresented Reagan’s record.

Speaking at a press conference in Gyeongju, South Korea, on Saturday, Carney said the ad had deeply “offended” Trump. He added that he would not have approved its release had he been consulted.

Trump reacted with anger, labeling the Canadians’ actions “egregious behavior” and suspending ongoing trade talks with Ottawa. The president also implemented additional tariffs on Canadian imports in retaliation.

On Friday, Trump revealed that Carney had reached out personally to apologize, describing the gesture as “very nice,” though he noted that negotiations remained on hold. “Ronald Reagan loved tariffs – and they tried to make it look the other way,” Trump said.

Carney’s statement followed the conclusion of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in South Korea, which both leaders attended earlier this week.
