South Korea Heads to Polls for Local Elections

(MENAFN) Millions of South Korean voters headed to the polls Wednesday for the country's ninth quadrennial local elections alongside parliamentary by-elections to fill 14 vacant National Assembly seats, the National Election Commission confirmed.

Polling opened nationwide and is set to run for 12 hours, closing at 6 p.m. local time (0900 GMT). The elections carry enormous political weight — with 16 metropolitan mayors and provincial governors, 227 municipal mayors, 933 metropolitan and provincial council members, 3,035 municipal council members, 16 education superintendents, and 14 parliamentary seats all up for grabs simultaneously.

Of approximately 44.65 million eligible voters, 23.51 percent cast early ballots during the advance voting window that ran Friday through Saturday.

The sweeping electoral contest is being widely interpreted as a direct referendum on the Lee Jae Myung administration as it enters its second year in power — with results expected to signal whether the South Korean public endorses the government's direction or is ready to deliver a course-correction mandate to the opposition.
